About the Project
The PERUN project represents a key milestone in the development of Slovakia’s national high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. Its objective is to establish a sustainable, accessible, and technologically advanced HPC ecosystem serving science, research, the public sector, and innovative companies.
The project is being implemented by the Centre of Shared Activities of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in accordance with the Action Plan for the Digital Transformation of Slovakia.
Project Objectives
The primary objective of the PERUN project is to build and operate a publicly accessible national HPC infrastructure capable of supporting complex computational tasks in fundamental and applied research, development, artificial intelligence, and data analytics.
At the same time, the project aims to foster the development of the Slovak HPC ecosystem – from technical infrastructure and user support to HPC adoption and stronger collaboration between research institutions and industry.
Project Scope
1. National HPC Infrastructure
- procurement and deployment of a modern high-performance computing system,
- provision of access for academia, public administration, government institutions, and private research and development organisations,
- delivery of technical and operational support services to users.
2. Operations and Sustainability
- reliable and secure operation of the HPC system,
- emphasis on energy efficiency and long-term economic sustainability,
- development of technical foundations for the future expansion of computational capacities.
3. Development of the HPC Ecosystem
- active promotion of HPC adoption,
- development of the user community,
- strengthening cooperation between academia, the public sector, and innovative companies,
- support for digital transformation and innovation-driven growth in Slovakia.
Project Timeline
2023–2025
Project preparation, public procurement, and technical implementation of the national HPC infrastructure.
From 2025 onwards
Development of the HPC ecosystem, support for HPC adoption, and expansion of the user community.
2025–2026
Installation, testing, and commissioning of the HPC system, provision of technical services, and opening the infrastructure to users.
The project is scheduled to run until 31 March 2026, while its outcomes are designed as a long-term sustainable infrastructure serving the Slovak research and innovation ecosystem.
Why PERUN Matters
Today, high-performance computing is considered a foundational technology for modern research, development, and innovation. The availability of a national HPC infrastructure will enable Slovak scientists, researchers, and institutions to:
- tackle computationally demanding challenges using domestic infrastructure,
- participate more actively in international research projects,
- strengthen Slovakia’s technological and digital sovereignty,
- enhance the competitiveness of a knowledge-based economy.
The PERUN project will therefore deliver long-term benefits for Slovak science, society, and the economy.
